The Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry: The Work of the Leader
(FTM-Leader)

It has been estimated that some 60 percent of all churches suffer from serious difficulties involving change and the time that could affect their congregational health.
Transitional congregational issues may be divided into five critical areas:
  • They are disconnected from their history
  • They have not developed an identity that fits their current circumstances
  • There is a need for some shifts in church leadership
  • Their links to their denomination have been weakened
  • They have not made a commitment to a new future or redefined purpose

Interim Ministry Network provides year-round training classes with these areas in mind. The training represent the latest expression of IMN's ongoing commitment to educating clergy and others about the work of the leader during transitional times, and most especially the transition that occurs when an incumbent cleric leaves a congregation.

HERE IS HOW WE DO IT. . . .

The FTM-Leader is based upon adult learning principles. Participants will be provided with readings in advance of their attendance at the program. They are expected to attend and actively participate in all workshop sessions. In addition there will be short “homework” reading assignments each evening. While IMN faculty members do not claim to be expert in all of the topics covered, each is a thoroughly trained and experienced practitioner of Intentional Interim Ministry.

With 30 years of ecumenical professional education experience the IMN faculty is a
thourouhly trained and experienced practitioner of Intentional Interim Ministry.

The Goals for this program are:

  • to introduce basic theories that are foundational to interim ministry,
  • provide opportunities for experiential learning through the use of case studies and sacred story,
  • present and discuss the work of the interim leader,
  • to introduce the tolls/resources that facilitate the work of the interim leader.

These goals are accomplished by providing information about the impact of the departure of the clergy person on a congregation and to describe healthy attitudes and practices of the Intentional Interim Leader.
