There are many stresses in the lives of congregations and those who lead them and our work together can feel divisive, conflictual, and emotionally charged. Now, more than ever, it’s important for transitional leader practitioners to be highly competent relationally. In offering this training, IMN aligns its mission to equip and support those who lead during times of transition by embracing the former Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations (EQHR) Center’s mission “to increase the effectiveness of leaders within faith-based communities through experiential development of emotional intelligence (EQ) competencies and human relations (HR) skills.”
Discover the Power of Emotional Intelligence in Ministry Leadership is a 4-session, 10-hour highly participative course that will help you identify and process your own feelings and emotions, improving your ability to recognize your emotional impact on others and to navigate your interactions with them.
OBJECTIVES – Through each session, you will explore and become more adept at:

- Participating in conversations that connect emotional intelligence with spirituality and faith issues
- Understanding the Emotional and Social Competency Framework and the vital importance of applying the following competencies in the leadership of ministry: Emotional Self-Awareness, Emotional Self-Control, Adaptability, Empathy, Organizational Awareness, Influence, and Conflict Management
- Increasing self-awareness
- Creating goals for improving your emotional and social abilities

Meet the Instructors from the former Emotional Intellegence and Human Relations (EQHR) Center
Rev. Andrea Myers (MDiv)
Rev. Andrea J. Myers has been a pastor in Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) for more than 15 years. Her ministry has focused on helping congregations develop as healthy communities with a clear sense of identity and shared purpose. She currently serves as pastor of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale, Iowa. She previously served congregations in Minnesota (Lake Crystal and Albert Lea) and Texas (Conroe).
Andrea’s ministry extends beyond her congregation as she equips ministry peers to become more effective preachers and leaders. She has been a certified EQ trainer since 2016 (through the former EQHR Center), and a mentor with Backstory Preaching since 2020.
A graduate of Wartburg Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and the College of William & Mary (B.S.), Andrea is a dedicated lifelong learner with interests in leadership development, preaching, politics, and history. Prior to seminary she worked for several years in the metro Washington, D.C. area in the software industry. Andrea is married to Rev. Ronald Myers and in her free time enjoys travel, knitting, and reading.
Rev. Dr. David Shelor (MDiv, MSOD, DMin)
Rev. Dr. David Shelor is a native of the mountains of Western North Carolina, USA, He has been a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for over 25 years. In that time, he has served the Church in Ghana, West Africa, Georgia and Florida. He currently serves as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin on Florida’s central Gulf Coast. In addition to degrees from Columbia (Decatur, Georgia) and McCormick (Chicago) Theological Seminaries, David earned a Master of Science in Positive Organizational Development from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case-Western University (Cleveland) and holds certifications in Nonprofit Management (University of South Florida), Executive Coaching (Case-Western), Appreciative Inquiry (Case-Western) and as a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator facilitator. David began his journey with the EQHR Center, first as a participant in the HR Workshop in 2012, served as a board member, and delights in every opportunity to nurture his own growth and learning as a trainer.
David is married to Dr. Merry Lynn Morris, a dance professor at the University of South Florida. He has two children, Graham, a recent college graduate, and Lillie, a college senior.
