Transitional Leadership Towards Transformation

When people hear interim ministry, they often think of a familiar model designed for a different era. A pastor leaves. A skilled interim arrives to guide a congregation into its next settled call. That model served communities of faith well for decades, offering structure and stability in moments of transition. IMN has long supported leaders in that work. It remains essential. It is part of who we are, but no longer all of who we are. The world has changed.

Communities of faith today face far more than clergy turnover. Sustainability, cultural shifts, leadership fatigue, financial strain, conflict, redevelopment, and even legacy and closure are now part of the landscape. Change is no longer occasional. It is constant.

As Rev. Dr. Jonathan New, our past Executive Director, reminded us, transitional leadership is the leadership that helps an organization face change and manage transitions for healthy outcomes. That definition still guides us. What has shifted is how we see ourselves within the changing tides of the Church and the world.

Transitional leadership is the larger field in which interim ministry once thrived. Transitional leadership is the posture and practice of guiding communities through complexity. It is the discipline that makes transformation possible.

IMN is not simply a network for interim ministers. We are a center for equipping Transitional Leadership that empowers transformation. And that leadership is not limited to clergy in temporary roles. Lay leaders, settled pastors, denominational staff, consultants, and board members are all navigating unprecedented change. In this season, every leader is called to guide communities through uncertainty with clarity and courage.

This vision is captured beautifully and boldly in our new IMN trainings. Our updated curriculum reflects that Transitional Leadership is adaptive, systemic, relational, and grounded in spiritual discernment. It prepares leaders not only to manage interim seasons, but to cultivate long-term transformation. That is the work of IMN.

If this vision resonates with you, we invite you into our upcoming trainings. Whether clergy or lay, settled or interim, this formation is for anyone called to guide communities through change. Learn more and register here.

As I step into the role of IMN Navigator, I am mindful that IMN itself is living this transition. We are honoring our history while clarifying our future. I am convinced IMN can be a catalyst for transforming the landscape of faith, forming leaders who help communities not merely endure change, but emerge renewed, aligned, and alive.
